Claude can see up to two years of transactions but cannot move money, and Anthropic says hub conversations are not used for model training and there are no ads or sponsored recommendations.

Anthropic launched Personal Finance for Claude on Nov. 5, a beta that lets U.S. paid subscribers securely connect bank and credit card accounts and ask Claude about spending, balances and upcoming bills. Access is read-only, so Claude cannot move, manage or invest money. The beta begins rolling out this week to Pro, Max and Ultra subscribers in the U.S.

What Claude can do

  • Spending analysis. Claude adds up spending across connected accounts, sorts it into categories such as rent and utilities, food and drink, and shopping, and compares trends from month to month. Users can ask follow-up questions about their spending.
  • Problem spotting. Claude can flag duplicate charges, unexpected fees and rising bills.
  • Interest and terms. Claude can explain terms such as APR and calculate how much interest a user paid over the past year.
  • Balances and bills. Claude can estimate account balances after upcoming payments and show what is due before payday.
  • Dashboards. Users can build adjustable dashboards, charts and bill calendars, including weekly spending charts and expense calendars.

Privacy and security

  • Sign-in. Users sign in to their bank directly through Plaid, so Claude never sees their bank password.
  • Limits on other accounts. The Help Center limits what Claude reads from loan and investment accounts to balances and credit limits.
  • Chat history. Financial data shown in a chat stays in the user's chat history until that chat is deleted.
  • Disconnecting. Anthropic says users can disconnect their accounts at any time.
  • Accuracy. Anthropic advises users to check important figures with their bank, because Claude can make mistakes.

How it compares

OpenAI launched similar personal finance tools in ChatGPT in May for U.S. Pro users, also using Plaid, which connects to more than 12,000 financial institutions. TechCrunch described Claude as playing catch-up. Engadget noted one difference: Anthropic excludes hub conversations from training, while OpenAI applies users' existing data control settings. Anthropic launched Claude for Legal and Claude for Financial Services earlier this year.

What comes next

Anthropic said it is exploring how Claude could work with licensed professionals and regulated firms to provide financial advice, though it has not said what that would look like. It is inviting banks and wealth managers to contact the company.

What to watch

  • Rollout. How quickly the beta reaches all eligible U.S. Pro, Max and Ultra subscribers, and whether it expands beyond the U.S. or to other plans.
  • Features. Whether Anthropic adds more account types or tools beyond spending, balances and bills.
  • Advice. Whether Anthropic announces partnerships with licensed professionals or regulated firms.
  • Competition. How Claude's finance tools compare with ChatGPT's as both add features.
