Kforce Beats on EPS, but a 12-Cent Insurance Gain Did Much of the Work and Q4 Margins Step Down

Kforce reported third-quarter EPS of $0.90, $0.14 above estimates, on in-line revenue of $357.8 million, but a $0.12 life-insurance gain accounts for most of the beat, and its fourth-quarter outlook calls for operating margin to fall to 4.5% to 4.9%.

Revenue rose 2.4% from the second quarter, and EPS rose 23.3%. Net income was $15.4 million on $22.5 million of operating income. President and CEO Joseph J. Liberatore said Kforce was "extremely pleased to deliver a quarter of accelerating revenue and earnings growth."

How much of the beat was real?

The $0.90 includes a $0.12-per-share gain on company-owned life insurance, which also added 0.6 percentage points to the operating margin. Kforce said excluding it, EPS growth would have been 23.8% year over year instead of 42.9%. By our calculation, EPS without the gain was about $0.78, so the beat against the $0.76 estimate shrinks from $0.14 to roughly $0.02, and the operating margin would have been about 5.7%.

Fourth-quarter guidance

The outlook sits above consensus on both lines. By our calculation, the midpoints of $356 million in revenue and $0.66 in EPS are about 2% and 10% above the estimates. The fourth quarter has 62 billing days versus 64 in the third, which weighs on revenue, and operating margin is guided well below the third quarter's 6.3% as SG&A rises to roughly 23% of revenue from 21.6%.

Cash and shareholder returns

Kforce ended the quarter with $0.3 million in cash and $107.9 million drawn on its credit facility, up from $66.4 million at the end of 2025. Free cash flow was negative $8.0 million for the first nine months, versus positive $30.1 million a year earlier. Over the same period the company repurchased $15.1 million in stock and paid $20.2 million in dividends. The fourth-quarter dividend is $0.40 per share, payable Dec. 18 to holders of record on Dec. 4.

What it means for investors

Revenue growth is accelerating, led by technology staffing, and the outlook is above estimates. The caution is quality: the headline beat leans on a one-time gain, and the negative free cash flow and higher borrowing show that buybacks and dividends are being funded partly with debt.
