OpenAI is reportedly developing a business analytics tool for ChatGPT that resembles Google Search Console, which could give companies a new way to measure how often ChatGPT mentions them and sends customers to their websites. The tool has not been announced and has no confirmed launch date. Alphabet ($GOOGL) shares were up 1.91% at $287.97 at 10:57 a.m. ET on Friday.

How it compares with Google Search Console

Google Search Console shows website owners how their pages perform in Google Search, including impressions and clicks. A comparable tool from OpenAI would give businesses first-party numbers on their visibility inside ChatGPT answers. Kaziukėnas noted that the tool would not explain why mentions or clicks rise or fall, so businesses would still need outside prompt-tracking tools to understand the changes.

OpenAI's existing business tools

The report describes organic tools, separate from OpenAI's advertising. According to Shero Commerce, OpenAI launched a tracking pixel and Conversions API for ChatGPT ads in May and opened product feed ads to retail advertisers in June. Shopify turned on Agentic Storefronts for eligible merchants in March, which syncs their product catalogs to ChatGPT.

What to watch

  • Launch. Whether OpenAI announces the tool and when it becomes available to businesses.
  • Data. Whether the dashboard adds citation tracking, query data or other detail beyond mentions and clicks.
  • Verification. Which platforms besides Shopify can be used to verify ownership.
  • Search impact. Whether businesses shift marketing effort from Google to ChatGPT visibility as measurement improves.
