Samsung Electronics reported record third-quarter results, with operating profit of 107.44 trillion won (about $80.27 billion), up 783% from a year earlier, on revenue of 195.25 trillion won (about $145.88 billion), up 126.9%. Operating profit matched the preliminary figure Samsung issued on Oct. 8, revenue was slightly above it, and both landed within about 0.3% of the consensus figures provided to MarketCatalyst, but net profit of about $56.19 billion fell short of the $66.54 billion estimate. AI memory demand drove the quarter, with the chip division generating almost all of the profit. U.S. dollar figures use roughly 1,338.50 won per dollar.

Against the won-denominated consensus provided to MarketCatalyst (operating profit of 107.66 trillion won and revenue of 195.79 trillion won), operating profit was about 0.2% lower and revenue about 0.3% lower by our calculation, so the headline numbers were essentially in line. The notable miss was net profit: by our calculation, $56.19 billion was about 16% below the $66.54 billion estimate, and net profit was about 39% of revenue versus an operating margin of 55%. Different data providers show slightly different consensus numbers for the same quarter, so some reports describe revenue as a small beat.

Chips carry the quarter

DivisionRevenueOperating profit
Device Solutions (chips)147.1T won (+15% QoQ)106.5T won (about $79.57B)
Memory (within chips)140.7T won (+427% YoY)n/a
Device eXperience (phones, appliances)52.1T won (+8% QoQ)-0.8T won loss

The chip division's operating profit topped 100 trillion won for the first time and was about 99% of the company total, by our calculation. Samsung said demand for high-bandwidth memory (HBM) and server DRAM, along with higher memory prices, drove the gain, and that it sharply increased HBM4 supply. According to a summary of the earnings call, HBM4 sales more than tripled from the second quarter. The Device eXperience unit, which makes phones and appliances, posted a second straight quarterly operating loss of about 0.8 trillion won as memory and raw-material costs squeezed margins.

Memory outlook

As provided to MarketCatalyst, Samsung warned that memory shortages will worsen in 2027 and expects subdued display demand to persist through 2027. Samsung plans 2026 capital spending of 84.4 trillion won, including 76.8 trillion won for the chip division and 3.9 trillion won for Samsung Display. Research and development spending reached about $10.76 billion, up 63% from a year earlier.

Dividend and shareholder returns

Samsung announced a third-quarter cash dividend of 4,601 won per common share, totaling about 30 trillion won ($22.41 billion), or about $3.44 per share. The record date was Sept. 30 and payment is scheduled for Nov. 27. For all of 2026, Samsung estimates total shareholder returns of 90 trillion to 110 trillion won ($67.24 billion to $82.18 billion), of which about 35 trillion won ($26.15 billion) has been planned or completed. By our calculation, that leaves roughly 55 trillion to 75 trillion won ($41.09 billion to $56.03 billion) to be allocated, including substantial share repurchases and cancellations alongside dividends. The board is expected to set final allocations and execution plans in late January 2027.

AI partnerships

As provided to MarketCatalyst, Samsung Electronics and five affiliates committed $1 billion to Helix Digital Infrastructure, an AI data-center platform backed by KKR, including $500 million from Samsung Electronics. Samsung will also integrate Mistral AI technology into its semiconductor design and manufacturing and led the French startup's Series D funding round.

What it means

Samsung's earnings now depend heavily on one division, and on memory prices and HBM demand. The operating numbers were already known from the Oct. 8 preliminary release, so attention shifts to the net profit shortfall, the size of the buyback program in January, and whether HBM4 volume growth continues as shortages persist.

What to watch. Samsung's late-January 2027 board decision on shareholder returns, HBM4 volume and pricing, a return to profit in the phone and appliance unit, and any change to the 2027 memory outlook.
