Why Reddit Is Tanking After a Beat: Google AI Traffic Loss, a Soft Q4 Guide and a Login Wall

Revenue rose 53% and profit jumped, but the traffic that feeds Reddit's growth is shrinking. Here is what management said and what the numbers show.

Reddit (RDDT) shares fell roughly 24% to about $99 in mid-morning trading on Oct. 30, extending a slide that began after the report, even though third-quarter revenue rose 53% to $895 million and diluted EPS of $1.40 beat the $1.33 analysts expected. Investors are reacting to three things in the outlook: management said search referral traffic, which feeds Reddit's user growth, is falling fast; fourth-quarter revenue guidance of $1.00 billion to $1.03 billion sits below the roughly $1.05 billion expected; and Reddit plans to move toward a logged-in-only experience that could cost it casual visitors. The shares closed at $129.60 on Oct. 29 and had already lost about 44% this year.

The biggest worry is where users come from. Management said search referral traffic fell meaningfully in the third quarter and that the decline accelerated late in the quarter, hitting logged-out and web visitors hardest. In October, referrals dropped by more than 1 million per week on average. On the call, CEO Steve Huffman attributed the drop mainly to Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, saying AI Mode does not drive traffic, and noted that machine-translated content may also be ranking lower, which mostly affects users outside the U.S. The shareholder letter refers to AI-powered search generally rather than naming Google.

Then came the warning that changed the stock's direction. If the October rate of loss continues, Reddit said total daily active uniques could fall by a low-double-digit percentage in the fourth quarter from the current base of about 130 million. At 10% to 12%, that would be roughly 13 million to 16 million users, by our calculation. For another view of how Google's AI features are changing advertising economics, see our Alphabet recap.

Reason two: Q4 guidance came in light

MeasureQ4 2026 guidanceReference point
Revenue$1.00B-$1.03BAbout $1.05B expected; implies 38%-42% growth versus 53% in Q3
Adjusted EBITDA$480M-$510M$512.2M estimate

At the midpoint of $1.015 billion, revenue guidance is about 3.3% below the roughly $1.05 billion consensus, and the $495 million EBITDA midpoint is about 3.4% below the estimate, by our calculation. Even the top end of the revenue range falls short of expectations. The more important signal is growth: Q3 growth of 53% slows to roughly 38% to 42%, a clear deceleration.

Reason three: user growth stalled in the U.S.

Daily active uniques (Q3)GlobalU.S.International
Total130.3M (+12%)50.7M (-2%)79.6M (+24%)
Logged-in53.5M (+7%)23.4M (+1%)30.1M (+11%)

U.S. daily users fell 2%, driven by logged-out visitors, who arrive mostly through search. Global daily user growth of 12% was six points slower than the prior quarter. Logged-out users make up about 59% of the global daily base, by our calculation, so a search-driven decline lands on the largest group.

What the login plan really is

Reddit says it will shift to a primarily logged-in experience, but the first step is a test. Testing begins in the fourth quarter in select markets outside the U.S., not in the U.S. Huffman called it a test while saying "we are going to make this transition," and said some version of Reddit would remain accessible before a prompt to log in. Management gave several reasons: better personalization, stronger ad-targeting signals, higher engagement, protecting its content from scraping, and adapting to regulation. It expects to trade some reach for deeper engagement. The risk for investors is that a login wall could reduce top-of-funnel traffic at the same time search referrals are falling.

  • Monetization mix. Logged-in and app users generate over 80% of monetization, which softens the revenue effect of losing logged-out visitors. A U.S. user is worth about 5.7 times an international one, by our calculation, so losing U.S. search traffic costs more than the headline user number suggests.
  • International growth is being bought. Revenue is growing faster abroad, and the company raised international user marketing spend to offset lost search referrals.
  • Data licensing. Management said talks about licensing its content are active but gave no update and said any deal must be a fair exchange of value. A login requirement also makes scraping harder.
  • Buyback math. The $149.81 average repurchase price is about 34% above the current price, by our calculation. With roughly 206 million fully diluted shares, the company's value is about $20 billion, of which $3.03 billion is cash, by our calculation.
  • A larger drawdown. After the $129.60 close the stock was down about 44% for the year. At about $99, the loss is roughly 57% of its value at the start of the year, by our calculation.
  • Profit is not the issue. A 31.7% net margin, 40.5% free cash flow margin and 91.5% gross margin show a business with little capital need. The debate is about growth.

What it means

The report separates today's earnings from tomorrow's audience. Reddit is monetizing its logged-in core better than ever, but the audience that arrives through Google is where growth came from, and AI-generated answers are cutting that path. The guidance and the user warning turn a beat into a question about how many new users the platform can attract once search stops sending them. Whether logged-in engagement and international growth can offset a shrinking search funnel will drive the next few quarters. See also the market recap for how the stock fits into the day's selloff.

What to watch. The first results of the logged-in test outside the U.S., whether weekly search referral losses persist or ease, fourth-quarter daily user counts against the warning of a low-double-digit decline, and any update on data licensing.
