Chipotle Cut to Hold at TD Cowen as October Sales Soften
TD Cowen downgraded Chipotle to Hold and cut its price target to $32 from $44, warning October sales may miss the fourth-quarter pickup it expected. Q3 results arrive October 28.
TD Cowen analyst Andrew Charles downgraded Chipotle Mexican Grill (CMG) to Hold from Buy on Wednesday, October 21, and cut his price target to $32 from $44. His reason is alternative data suggesting a weak start to the fourth quarter. "We worry Oct. sales are shaping up to miss the 4Q inflection point," he wrote, per Investing.com. The note lands a week before Chipotle reports third-quarter results on October 28 at about 4:10 p.m. ET, with a call at 4:30 p.m. ET.
Why TD Cowen turned cautious
Charles had expected sales to accelerate in the fourth quarter against an easy comparison, when Chipotle concentrates its main 2026 efforts: menu innovation, new marketing and value promotions through Chipotle Rewards. Alternative data now points the other way, he says. He forecasts fourth-quarter same-store sales growth of 1%, the lowest on the Street, and 2.1% for 2027 against a consensus of 3.2%. He sees a bear case in which consensus comps of 3% to 3.5% in the medium term are too high, because Chipotle is leaning less on price to drive traffic. Reaching them would depend on less proven drivers, such as the high-efficiency equipment package and catering. TD Cowen still expects third-quarter results slightly better than consensus.
The $32 target equals about 24 times rolling two-year forward EPS of $1.34, which checks out by our calculation. TD Cowen's bear case is $25 and its bull case $40, and it considers the bear case more likely. Against Tuesday's $29.65 close, the new target implies about 8% upside, by our calculation.
Where the stock stands
Investing.com's page listed Chipotle at $28.23, down 4.79%, though that quote may not match the moment of the note. That figure is consistent with the 4.79% decline applied to Tuesday's $29.65 close, by our calculation. MarketBeat puts the 52-week range at $28.03 to $42.74, so the stock sits near its low. It shows a 50-day average of $33.88 and a 200-day average of $33.45. We have not confirmed a closing price for October 21.

The pattern is mixed, with cuts from TD Cowen, Raymond James, Stephens and Baird and a raise from Morgan Stanley. Only the TD Cowen, Morgan Stanley and Bank of America entries were matched to published reports. The rest come from an analyst-actions tracker screenshot, which also lists JPMorgan reiterating Overweight on September 29 without a target of its own. The tracker lists TD Cowen twice, as TD Cowen and as Cowen & Co.; we show it once. Its $41 "consensus" figure differs from MarketBeat's $43.15 average target, because the sources use different analyst sets.
What the Street is saying going into earnings
MarketBeat counts 21 Buy and 11 Hold ratings, a "Moderate Buy" consensus. For the second quarter, reported July 29, Chipotle earned $0.33 per share against $0.32 expected, on revenue of $3.35 billion against $3.33 billion, up 9.3% from a year earlier. Analysts expect $1.14 of EPS for the current year. With the stock near a 52-week low and targets split between $32 and $53, the October 28 report is the next test of the traffic recovery that TD Cowen now doubts.
