CoreWeave's ($CRWV) 2032 bond, which carries a 9.625% coupon, now yields more than 16%, a sign that rising borrowing costs are putting pressure on the debt-funded AI data center buildout. The company's five-year credit default swap (CDS) spread topped 1,289 basis points on Thursday before easing to about 1,155 on Friday, according to CNBC. CoreWeave shares were up 2.50% at $44.75 at 12:40 p.m. ET.

The spreads of Nvidia, Broadcom and Amazon have risen sharply over the past month, but their absolute levels remain far below CoreWeave's. CoreWeave's spread is about eight times Nvidia's. The Thursday level was above CoreWeave's October peak, according to Deutsche Bank. Deutsche Bank's Jim Reid said in a Friday note that debt and equity markets are moving more in sync.

The AI debt boom

  • Hyperscaler issuance. Goldman Sachs reports $296 billion of hyperscaler debt issuance so far in 2026 and forecasts $440 billion in 2027, plus $300 billion of project-level financing.
  • Recent deals. Goldman counts five AI bond deals totaling $67 billion since Oct. 29.
  • Cash flow. Third-quarter capital spending exceeded operating cash flow, leaving hyperscalers collectively with negative free cash flow.
  • Bank of America. BofA projects AI-related credit issuance, public and private, will rise 31% to $685 billion in 2027 before falling 23% to $531 billion in 2028.

Regulatory and credit risks

  • Moratoriums. Goldman estimates potential data center moratoriums could affect 45% of planned U.S. capacity, much of it in Texas. Delays would shorten neocloud contracts and disrupt customer prepayments.
  • Tighter credit. Christopher Wood, Jefferies' global head of equity strategy, wrote in a Friday note that the AI capex race is most likely to end when "the credit card will be taken away." Tighter credit, even without a collapse in AI demand, could ultimately constrain expansion.
