Google Buys Crusoe's Wyoming Data Center Site, Closing Out Crusoe's Pre-Construction Work
Crusoe and Tallgrass Energy planned a hybrid power setup of fuel cells, grid electricity and gas turbines, with long-term carbon capture, before the site passed to Google.
Google ($GOOGL) acquired Crusoe's data-center site in southeast Wyoming on Nov. 6, after Crusoe completed pre-construction work that included site selection, governmental approvals and power strategy. Crusoe announced the sale; no price or other terms were disclosed.

What Crusoe and Tallgrass built
- Joint development. Crusoe and Tallgrass developed the campus together, coordinating energy-systems design, data-center engineering, site development and engagement with the hyperscaler customer.
- Energy strategy. The plan pairs fuel cells and natural gas turbines with grid power, with carbon capture planned over the long term through Tallgrass's sequestration hub.
- Original design. The partners introduced the project on July 24, 2025 as a 1.8 GW campus that could be expanded to as much as 10 GW.
- CEO comment. Crusoe co-founder and CEO Chase Lochmiller said the company's pre-construction efforts, which he described as origination, entitlement and de-risking, set up the Wyoming project for construction and eventual operation.
Google's Wyoming plans
Reports on the sale say Google announced a long-term investment of about $17 billion in Laramie County, Wyoming, the day before Crusoe's announcement, working with Tallgrass Energy, Black Hills Energy, American Electric Power and Related Digital. In October, American Electric Power (AEP) said it plans a $4 billion, 702 MW fuel-cell power facility near Cheyenne under a 20-year power purchase agreement with Google, using fuel cells from Bloom Energy ($BE), with carbon capture planned and full operation targeted for the end of 2028. Google also reached an agreement with Black Hills to supply power to its planned Cheyenne data center.
How the project got here
In June, Crusoe said it had paused the project, while Bloomberg reported that Alphabet had concerns about costs and timeline under Crusoe's leadership and that Crusoe was under pressure to exit. Black Hills said at the time that the project was not paused and would proceed without Crusoe. A June 30 Laramie County filing identified Google as the owner of the Cheyenne-area campus, which was then described as a 2.7 GW facility. Friday's announcement marks the end of Crusoe's pre-development work on the site.
