OpenAI Launches GPT-6.1 Terra With 50% Lower API Prices and 3x Faster Task Completion

OpenAI introduced GPT-6.1 Terra, a model it says carries API prices 50% lower than GPT-5.6 Terra and completes tasks three times faster, as the AI labs compete harder on cost.

OpenAI introduced GPT-6.1 Terra on Monday, a model the company says carries API prices 50% lower than GPT-5.6 Terra and completes tasks three times faster. The launch lands in the middle of a price war among AI labs, and it fills the middle of OpenAI's lineup.

Terra is the balance point between the frontier models and the cheapest tier: stronger than Luna and cheaper than the flagship, aimed at everyday production workloads where cost per task matters more than peak capability.

What a 50% cut could mean

The headline claim is easy to size. By our calculation, if the cut applied evenly to GPT-5.6 Terra's mid-October list price of about $2 per million input tokens and $12 per million output tokens, GPT-6.1 Terra would land near $1 and $6. That would put it well below GPT-6.1 Sol's $2 and $10, which matches pre-launch expectations that the new Terra would be priced under Sol. The three-times-faster figure refers to task completion, so the savings could compound for agentic and coding workloads where a single job strings together many model calls.

A long-anticipated launch

The model name surfaced days earlier, reportedly in code repositories where Microsoft engineers had swapped GPT-5.6 Terra for GPT-6.1 Terra in dozens of evaluation settings, and in reports that a new Terra was in the works and might beat Sol at a lower price. GitHub Copilot was also reportedly testing the model for code review. Microsoft (MSFT) is among OpenAI's largest partners and reports earnings on Wednesday.

What it means for investors

A cheaper, faster mid-tier model pushes the price war with Anthropic and other labs further, and it raises the stakes for the companies that sell AI through usage-based pricing. Lower per-token prices can expand demand, but they also squeeze margins unless compute costs fall at the same pace. For cloud providers hosting these workloads, the question is whether volume growth outruns the drop in price per task.
