KIOXIA Joins Applied Materials' $5B Push to Reinvent AI Memory

Applied Materials says KIOXIA is joining its $5 billion EPIC Center to co-develop next-generation memory technology for AI, targeting higher-density chips and faster paths to commercial production, though no launch date or performance target was given.

Applied Materials ($AMAT) said KIOXIA will join its EPIC Center in Silicon Valley as an innovation partner to develop next-generation memory technologies for AI computing.

Research focus: the companies plan to work on higher-density memory cells and structures, multi-chip stacking architectures, advanced packaging for stacked memory, and materials engineering approaches to support manufacturing at scale.

Performance goals: the collaboration aims to improve memory density, bandwidth, and energy efficiency, while addressing the cost and complexity that come with manufacturing at those levels.

Commercialization: the partnership is intended to speed the path from lab research to high-volume production. Neither company gave a product launch date or performance benchmark.

EPIC investment: Applied Materials said capital spending on the EPIC Center is expected to scale to roughly $5 billion as customer projects get underway, and the center is expected to be operationally ready this year.

"AI infrastructure requires memory solutions that can deliver dramatically higher density, greater bandwidth, and improved energy efficiency," said Gary Dickerson, president and CEO of Applied Materials. KIOXIA CEO Hiroo Ota said the collaboration "reflects our shared commitment to driving memory innovation."

Context. KIOXIA joins an existing EPIC Center ecosystem that includes chipmakers, chip designers, equipment partners, and universities. The center's stated research areas span advanced logic scaling, next-generation memory architectures including DRAM and HBM, and 3D chip-stacking techniques.
