OpenAI Passes 1.2 Billion Users While Chasing a $1.4 Trillion Valuation
OpenAI says ChatGPT has hit 1.2 billion weekly users, and Bloomberg reports the company is seeking $30 billion in new funding at a $1.4 trillion valuation — a bridge round standing in for the IPO it's delaying over AI safety concerns.
OpenAI said Tuesday that ChatGPT has reached 1.2 billion weekly active users, even as the company is reportedly in early talks to raise at least $30 billion in new funding at a valuation of about $1.4 trillion.
| Metric | Figure |
|---|---|
| ChatGPT weekly active users | 1.2 billion |
| Target funding round | $30 billion+ |
| Target valuation | ~$1.4 trillion |
| Prior round (March) | $122B raised, $852B valuation |
| Annualized revenue run rate | ~$70 billion |
A bridge round, not an IPO
Bloomberg reported the fundraising talks are still in early stages and terms could change, with investor demand said to be driving the round's size. The proposed raise would function as bridge financing in place of an IPO — OpenAI confidentially filed IPO paperwork in June but has said it won't go public in 2026, citing AI safety concerns. The $1.4 trillion target marks a jump from the $1.2 trillion figure Bloomberg had previously reported OpenAI was considering, and would put the company's valuation above rival Anthropic's most recent private mark.
The numbers behind the ask
The funding push comes alongside a sharp acceleration in OpenAI's business. Its annualized revenue run rate is nearing $70 billion after growing more than 70% since the start of the third quarter, according to sources who spoke to Axios. Enterprise revenue more than doubled over the same period, and OpenAI added more consumer revenue in the third quarter alone than it added across all of 2025. Anthropic, by comparison, had reached an annualized run rate of about $65 billion as of late July.
