OpenAI's DevDay Haul: Always-On Agents, a Cheaper Model, and 20+ New Tools
OpenAI's DevDay 2026 brought always-on Dots agents, a cheaper GPT-6.1 Sol model, a faster Ultrafast tier, and new workplace tools like ChatGPT Space — more than 20 announcements in all, pushing OpenAI's products further into autonomous agent territory.
OpenAI unveiled more than 20 new products and features at its DevDay 2026 keynote in San Francisco on September 29, pushing its tools further from chatbots and toward agents that can work independently.
Dots: always-on agents
The headline launch was Dots, always-on AI agents that run on OpenAI's GPT-6 Astra model. Each Dot gets its own cloud computer and browser, can connect to more than 4,000 apps, and keeps working in the background even after a user closes their laptop. Users can message or call a Dot through ChatGPT, Slack, or Teams. Dots are rolling out today to Pro and Business Premium users in most markets (excluding the EEA, Switzerland, and the UK); Enterprise access, including Edu and Healthcare tiers, requires administrator enablement.
GPT-6.1 Sol: a cheaper, faster model
OpenAI also introduced GPT-6.1 Sol, an upgrade built for professional work, computer use, and agentic coding. The company says it approaches the performance of its flagship GPT-6 Astra model on coding benchmarks at roughly one-fifth the token price ($2 per million input tokens, $10 per million output). OpenAI separately said it withheld a model called GPT-6.1 Astra because it didn't meet internal safety standards.
A faster tier and a pricier plan
A new "Ultrafast" tier can generate tokens up to eight times faster in Codex and six times faster through the API, according to OpenAI. It's available today for GPT-6 Astra and coming soon for GPT-6.1 Sol. A new Pro 500 plan, priced above the existing Pro tier, bundles Ultrafast access with higher usage allowances.
Workplace tools and a coding overhaul
OpenAI announced ChatGPT Space, a persistent shared workspace where teams, ChatGPT, and Dots can collaborate on projects, along with Pages, a document editor built for humans and Dots to use together. Codex now runs fully in the cloud, letting developers start and monitor coding tasks from a phone, and its command-line tool accepts voice instructions. The Agents API gained support for computer use, letting developers build agents that interact directly with software. A new Decisions API, in limited preview, lets companies route narrow, repetitive decisions — like approving or rejecting a request — to AI choosing among predefined outcomes, responding in about 150 milliseconds.
